Fishing seasons and conditions on the Yakima River

The Yakima fishes well for most of the year, but some windows are better than others depending on what you’re looking for.

  • Spring (March through May) is one of the most consistent times to be on the water. Flows are usually stable, fish are active, and you’ll see a mix of nymphing and early dry fly opportunities. It’s a good time for both numbers and quality fish.
  • Summer (Mid-June to Late August) can still fish well, but it’s more condition and flow dependent. Early mornings and evenings tend to be best, especially during hopper season, while midday often slows down with heat and pressure.
  • Fall (September into mid-October) is another strong window and my favorite. Cooler temps, fewer crowds, and fish feeding with intent make it a great time to be out, especially if you like more technical fishing.

At the end of the day, success on the Yakima comes down to adjusting to conditions—reading water, dialing in depth and presentation, and staying flexible throughout the day
