As a veteran-owned business, Shaw Fly Fishing proudly welcomes guests from all walks of life.</p><p><br></p><p>Trips are run from a 16-foot ClackaCraft drift boat built in 2022 and rowed by hand, allowing quiet movement through productive water without disturbing fish. With a maximum capacity of two anglers, each outing stays focused and unrushed. The Yakima River is home to healthy populations of rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and mountain whitefish, offering consistent action and varied water that keeps each trip engaging.</p><p><br></p><p>Guests can choose between a full-day trip of at least six hours or a morning half-day trip lasting a minimum of four hours, with start times at either 8:00 AM or 11:00 AM. The primary season runs from March through October, with peak demand during spring and early fall. Summer trips in June and July are often overlooked but provide steady fishing and lighter crowds. All trips are family-friendly, with a minimum age of six, and guests should bring a properly sized life vest for children. <p>Led by local guide David Shaw, these trips focus on targeting Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout, and Mountain Whitefish on Washington’s only Blue Ribbon Trout water, the Yakima River. Walk and wade trips are available on request, all listed trips are float trips in a 16ft WF Clackacraft Drift Boat.</p>

<p>When guiding trips on the Yakima River, I focus on putting you in front of as many opportunities for our wild trout as possible!</p><p><br></p><p>I grew up fly fishing in Montana, Wyoming, and Washington, and that background shapes how I approach the Yakima—reading water, understanding seasonal changes, and making the right adjustments as conditions change.</p><p><br></p><p>I enjoy teaching and take a patient, focused approach on the water. My goal is not just to put you on fish, but to help you understand what’s happening so it sticks. We’ll work through fly selection, depth and how to read water in a way that carries over to your own fishing. Whether you’re new or experienced, I keep things relaxed and focused—a solid day built around improving your approach and putting trout in the net.</p>

This private trip is designed for anglers who want more time on the water and a focused approach to targeting trout.</p><h3><br></h3><h3>How much is a half-day fly fishing trip?</h3><p>Half-day fly fishing trips are $400 for up to two guests and last a minimum of 4 hours. Morning start times are available at 8:00 AM or 11:00 AM, making these trips flexible and beginner friendly.</p><p><br></p><h3>What species can I catch on the Yakima River?</h3><p>Our trips target Rainbow trout, Cutthroat trout, and Mountain Whitefish. For specific details, see the below FAQs</p><p><br></p><h3>Do I need to bring my own fly fishing gear?</h3><p>Guests are welcome to bring their own fly-rods, reels, etc. If you don't have any gear or would prefer to test out other equipment, I always bring a variety of rods ranging from Orvis and Sage to Redington. All of my reels are either Redington, Sage or Ross. All flies, tackle (tippet, leaders, etc) are included at no extra cost.</p><p><br></p><h3>Do I need to bring my own waders and boots?</h3><p>Generally in the summer, we wet wade, meaning we're rocking shorts and wading boots due to the Eastern Washington Heat. During the shoulder seasons (March-May and September-October), I'll generally be wearing wading pants or full waders. Please let me know 5 days in advance for the trip if you need waders and/or boots, I have a limited selection of gear but can always source more with proper notice.</p><h2><strong><u>*Important* No studded boots in the drift boat, it absolutely destroys the deck</u></strong></h2><p><br></p><h3>Do I need a fishing license?</h3><p><strong>Yes, a valid Washington state fishing license is required for all anglers fishing with on the Yakima River.</strong> Licenses are not included and should be purchased before your trip.</p><p><br></p><h3>Are your trips are family friendly?</h3><p>Yes, all trips with are family friendly and suitable for beginners. However, <strong><u>the minimum age for children is 6 years old</u></strong>, and you will be required to provide a properly sized life vest for kids.</p><p><br></p><h3>What is the best time of year for fly fishing on the Yakima River?</h3><p>The best fly fishing on the Yakima River typically runs from March through May before runoff and irrigation demands start to peak and then from late August to October after the "flop" occurs, when the water management shifts to the Tieton.</p><p><br></p><h3>What should I bring on trip?</h3><p>Guests should bring a fishing license, weather-appropriate clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, snacks, and drinks. I recommend dressing in layers to stay comfortable throughout the day, the boat also has a decent amount of water-tight storage as well.</p><p><br></p><h3>Are booking deposits refundable?</h3><p>No, booking deposits for Shaw Fly Fishing Yakima River fly fishing trips are non-refundable.
